A single myosin head moves along an actin filament with regular steps of 5.3 nanometres

Article Abstract:

Studies of the actomyosin motor have been developing and the actin monomer and myosin head structures have led to understanding of the interaction between the myosin head and the actin filament. A new technique to directly manipulate single myosin subfragment-1 (S1) molecules has been developed. This uses a scanning probe for measuring mechanical events during actomyosin displacement generation, at high temporal and spatial resolution.

Support for lever arm

Article Abstract:

A new study study of muscle movement supports the current theories on the way that cross-bridge changes between actin and myosin filaments act on muscle force or shortening. Experiments using fluorescence resonance energy transfer and a myosin fragment show the relationship between the myosin and actin and facilitate a detailed calculation of the molecular forces involved.
