The noise is the signal

Article Abstract:

A number of research projects have produced information about how interactions between electronics affect electronic behaviour. One research group has made high-frequency noise measurements on a thin, short, narrow, gold strip with a high electron density. Another group has measured shot noise in current flows through two successive tunnelling barriers, and another has created the electronic equivalent of a half-silvered mirror by adjusting the height of a barrier capable of transmitting or reflecting electrons.

Stripes of a different stripe

Article Abstract:

The electronic charge density of some materials organizes itself into stripes, a phenomenon that has been of considerable interest to condensed-matter physicists. A new study has discovered a novel paired stripe order in the manganite La1-xCaxMnO3, one of the 'colossal magnetoresistance' manganites. The study shows that the manganite is a charged-order insulator at low temperature, taking the form of a pair of stripes with one roaming electron per manganese.
