A vote for wildlife

Article Abstract:

Voters of Los Angeles County passed a measure in Nov 1992 to protect wildlife corridors in the county. The measure will allow purchase of critical pieces of property where wildlife pathways have become constricted as a result of poorly planned urban sprawl. The closing off of pathways between wildlife zones has resulted in the deaths of many animals as they try to cross through populated areas. The situation is easily visible in the form of dead animals on the freeways which crisscross their natural habitat.

Letter from the Brazilian Amazon

Article Abstract:

Naturalists play an active role in species conservation in the Amazon region of Brazil. Rescue efforts include the rehabilitation of the black-crested eagle. The eagles are vulnerable to mistreatment in the wildlife trade market, and are sometimes beaten. Naturalists take in the birds, provide medical care and reintroduce them to their natural diets once rehabilitation is successful. The birds are then released back into the wild.

The Brazilian connection: people benefit as much as wildlife does in a new Amazonian reserve

Article Abstract:

The Amana and the Mamiraua Reserves protect an important area of the Amazon River basin where there are both white water rivers and black water rivers. People are allowed to live there in small villages and help to maintain the balance of the ecosystem with subsistence fishing, hunting and farming.
