Advisors may urge NIH to seek out industry support for clinical trials

Article Abstract:

A group of advisors may advise the National Institute of Health (NIH) to look for financial and other supports from the medical insurance and pharmaceutical industries. The NIH is having a financial crunch because of the disparity between the number of clinical experiments it has undertaken and its resources. Chances are there that the industry may impose its preferences over research at the NIH. The panel is also considering the physicians research grants and trainee clinical researchers of the United States.

Future of AIDS research office threatened

Article Abstract:

The future of National Institutes of Health Office of AIDS Research (OAR), set up by Congress in 1993, is uncertain as a US House subcommittee has voted to remove its control over AIDS research funding. The committee has recommended a 5.7% increase in the overall funds of National Institutes of Health, but removed funding allocations. Researchers fear that there could be a major cut in funds for AIDS research, though the funding level is not specified.
