Alternative blood substitutes

Article Abstract:

Perfluorochemical (PFC) compounds could be added to blood substitutes to achieve the oxygen-carrying effect of hemoglobin. Adding hemoglobin to the substitutes to effect oxygen transport is fraught with difficulty because hemoglobin is liable to spread bacterial infection. PFCs have two desirable properties: they are chemically inactive and can dissolve large volumes of respiratory gases. Moreover, the PFC's carbon-fluorine bond will prevent the carrying of pathogens. PFCs could also be used therapeutically as inducers of hepatic enzymes.

'Gene-foods': the alternative to a moratorium

Article Abstract:

The British public would not distrust genetically modified crops if an independent body were established to oversee development work in food products. Improved research programmes covering a wider scope of investigations are also required to assess the far-reaching aspects of genetic modification that may be potentially harmful. Open communications between consumer representatives and scientific bodies is also essential to improve public confidence in genetic engineering.

Alternative hydrogen cloud models

Article Abstract:

Several researchers have constructed a cosmic cloud model which yielded a low deuterium to hydrogen (D/H) ratio than previous models. The results of the new model provoked controversy within the scientific community since high D/H ratios have long served as a check to the Big Bang theory. However, the results of the new model are plausible provided that an accurate determination of the residual continuum level near the hydrogen series limits is achieved.
