An aerial sightability model for estimating ferruginous hawk population size

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to develop an aerial sightability model to estimate ferruginous hawk population size in two study areas in Wyoming. It was established that presence or absence of ferruginous hawks at the nest site did not seem to affect nest-detection rates. For active nests, the detection rate was 41.4%, while for inactive, natural nests the detection rate was 41.5%. Nest status was not an important predictor in the multiple regression model. Sightability modelling needs detailed planning and data collection, but has considerable advantages over single and stratified correction factors, double-count estimators and line transect.

Movements, survival, and mortality of black-tailed deer in the Kilckitat Basin of Washington

Article Abstract:

Wildlife populations may be comanaged by states and Native American tribes, and this is the case for the black-tailed deer in south-central Washington. Tribal harvesting of deer are not likely to have an impact on recreational hunting due to the small size of tribal harvests. Most deaths of marked deer in this study occurred as a result of hunting, and deaths of females were more likely to be a result of illegal than legal kills. Winter malnutrition also caused the deaths of many deer, though this varied from one year to another.

Sex-specific bias in helicopter surveys of elk: sightability and dispersion effects

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the accuracy of sex-ration data for elk which has been gathered through the use of a helicopter. The sightability of male and female elk is evaluated.
