Asteroid watchers debate false alarm

Article Abstract:

Scientists have been reviewing their approach to the provision of public information following intense media speculation over a possible asteroid collision. The Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams in Cambridge, Massachusetts, should not have warned the public about the projected event because other scientists had not been consulted, say critics. The communications network that asteroid researchers use to collaborate in research is at fault, say some.

Origin of asteroid rotation rates in catastrophic impacts

Article Abstract:

Asteroids' rotation rates that are deduced from periodic fluctuations in their brightness can reveal much about the history of asteroids. Spin was found to be related to collision history however the nature of their relationship is still to be determined. The latest model for the effect of impacts on large gravitating objects illustrates that increasing mean density is the cause of mean spin frequency for different types of asteroids.
