Autocatalytic processing of the 20S proteasome

Article Abstract:

The autocatalytic propeptide processing in the proteasome of Thermoplasma acidophilum is intermolecular. This processing is unessential for assembly and is independent of propeptide length and sequence. It takes place prior to completion of beta-subunit folding. Serine is an active-site nucleophile for proteolysis and cysteine for processing. Threonine is active in both processes. It is conserved in active proteasome subunits.

Structure of a molecular chaperone from a thermophilic archaebacterium

Article Abstract:

The three dimensional shape of the thermosome protein of the thermophilic archaebacterium Pyrodictium occultum has been analyzed. The shape has two rings with eight stacked subunits in a ring positioned face to face. The central hole is 6.7nm wide and contains a mass which partly blocks the opening to each subunit face and is probably connected to the ring.

Snapshots of nuclear pore complexes in action captured by cryo-electron tomography

Article Abstract:

Cryo-electron tomography is used for studying the structure of nuclear pore complexes in their functional environment, which is in intact nuclei of Dictyostelium discoideum. Single-molecule Monte Carlo simulations of nuclear import are performed in order to interpret the cargo distribution in the light of existing models for nuclear import.
