Ban on primate trade seen as threat to animals

Article Abstract:

British primatologists fear that a new campaign by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) to end the captive breeding and export of wild-caught primates for research purposes will deteriorate the animals' treatment. BUAV wants to persuade Indonesia, the Philippines and Mauritius to abolish their captive breeding programs which the group maintains are ruses for hiding continued trapping. However, the primatologists believe that doing away with the programs will merely shift the primate trade to countries less able to care for captive animals humanely.

Dutch shake up funding council, shift its emphasis

Article Abstract:

The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the funding council charged with managing Dutch investment in science, will revamp its priorities. NWO will now emphasize large-scale research employing many researchers over projects carried out by lone scientists. This change will impinge on the finances of 34 research foundations. NWO was forced to take this action when the Dutch government declined to increase appropriations for science.
