Non-territorial 'floaters' in great horned owls: space use during a cyclic peak of snowshoe hares

Article Abstract:

The behavior of non-territorial floaters in great horned owls was analyzed from 1988-1991 during their breeding periods and the population peak of their main prey, the snowshoe hare. Results showed that floaters' space use was relatively similar to that of territorial great horned owls, but their home range size was five times larger. Moreover, floaters concentrated on their defended territories during breeding periods even at extreme peaks of prey densities.

Spatial consequences of relatedness and age in buzzards

Article Abstract:

Research describing territoriality in young buzzards is presented. Radio tracking studies show that there is an initial attachment to their own nests and hence territory sharing but that this decreases with time.
