Bird communities and habitat as ecological indicators of forest condition in regional monitoring

Article Abstract:

A survey is conducted on 197 sampling plots in loblolly-shortleaf pine forests, spanning an area from Georgia to Virginia (U.S.A) and representing a gradient in levels of anthropogenic disturbance. The approach outlined makes it possible to monitor the regional effects of changing land use and habitat structure on indices of forest disturbance (habitat index) and disturbance to the breeding-bird community (bird community index).

Distribution of Bird Diversity in a Vulnerable Neotropical Landscape

Article Abstract:

A comparison of bird populations between Panama's Caribbean Sea region and its Pacific Ocean region is presented, drawing on 10 years of inventory data. Findings show that bird conservation efforts will require reestablishing forested connections in lowlands and foothills and preserving large tracts of forest, along with laws restricting hunting and preventing further intrusions.

Evaluating the importance of human-modified lands for neotropical bird conservation

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on bird communities in natural and human-modified habitats in Panama. The authors report the importance of these habitats for the species with different vulnarability to disturbance.
