Brain science benefits from budget plan

Article Abstract:

Japan's Science and Technology Agency plans to invest $18 billion in brain research during 1996-2016 and $0.9 billion in an advanced nuclear magnetic resonance center to study the structure of protein molecules. The brain research program will be based at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, coordinating with a network of laboratories engaged in similar programs. Major areas of research include structure and function of the brain, prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, and the brain's information processing functions.

The brain organization

Article Abstract:

An investigation on the regionalization process of the organization center of the vertebrate brain to the anterior/posterior end made use of grafting techniques. The objective of the study was to determine the part played by the fibroblast growth factor 8 (FgF8) genes in the development of the mesencephalon-metencephalon area of the chick brain. The findings of the study indicated that FGF8 protein can complete a midbrain by the formation of an organizing center in the anterior part of the brain.
