Bringing cartoons to life

Article Abstract:

Mathematical tools can be used to fill the gap between molecular interactions and physiological consequences in order to study cells as dynamic systems. The dynamical perspective can revolutionalize the molecular basis of cell physiology and its uncertainties can be resolved by understanding the importance of bistability, the roles of feedback and feed forward and robustness in the face of noise.

Reversible stress softening of actin networks

Article Abstract:

A report on reversible stress-softening behavior in actin networks reconstituted in vitro suggests a critical role for filaments resisting compression. The observation of both stress stiffening and softening suggests a complex interplay between entropic and enthalpic elasticity in determining the mechanical properties of actin networks.
