Breeding bird response to varying amounts of basal area retention in riparian buffers

Article Abstract:

The response of breeding bird communities to forest harvest that removed varying amounts of tree basal area from riparian buffers in northern Minnesota, USA is examined. The results suggest that any amount of harvest in riparian buffers next to clear-cut upland forest would affect breeding bird communities along small streams.

Red-headed woodpecker nest-habitat thresholds in restored savannas

Article Abstract:

Stand, nest-tree, and cavity characteristics of red-headed woodpeckers (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) in restored savannas within the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, Wisconsin, USA, are studied. They selected snags and trees with greater cavity density and dead limb length for nesting.

Use of the Beaufort Sea by king eiders breeding on the north slope of Alaska

Article Abstract:

Areas used by king eiders for breeding in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea is examined. Results conclude that Beaufort Sea is an important staging area for king eiders during postbreeding and the managers should consider eider distribution when mitigating for future offshore development.
