Broad-band optical parametric gain on a silicon photonic chip

Article Abstract:

The net optical on/off gain over a wavelength range of 28 nm through the optical process of phase-matched four-wave mixing in suitably designed Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) channel waveguides is demonstrated. The numerous applications of four-wave mixing demonstrated in SOI have potential to be transferred to silicon photonic integrated circuits, including all-optical switching, optical signal generation and optical sources for quantum information technology

Micrometre-scale silicon electro-optic modulator

Article Abstract:

A high-speed electro-optical modulator in compact silicon structures is experimentally demonstrated. The modulator is based on a resonant light-confining structure that enhances the sensitivity of light to small changes in refractive index of the silicon and also enables high-speed operation.

All-optical control of light on a silicon chip

Article Abstract:

An experimental demonstration of fast all-optical switching on silicon using highly light-confining structures to enhance sensitivity of light to changes in refractive index is presented. This result confirms the prediction of efficient optical switching in silicon using resonant structures.
