Butterfly mimics of ants

Article Abstract:

Social parasites, for example the large blue butterflies, are equipped to penetrate the highly protected chambers inside ant nests and feed, isolated from enemies, on the rich resources concentrated there. A genetic reconstruction of how social parasitism evolved among them will overturn conservation priorities, as the problem with the population of the large blue butterflies consist of several cryptic forms, many needing a different ant with a different habitat requirement.

Know thine enemy

Article Abstract:

A complete understanding of the parasite and its complex relationship with its human and mosquito hosts is important, in order to develop vaccines and drugs that will exploit the vulnerabilities in the parasite's biology. Comparative genomics and molecular genetics in the parasites will help in determining new ways for interrupting crucial steps in the parasite life-cycle.

Evidence for memory in invertebrate immunity

Article Abstract:

A model system of a copepod and a parasitic tapeworm to show that the success of reinfection depends on the antigenic resemblance between the consecutively encountered parasites was used. The findings of the study indicates that an invertebrate defense system may be capable of specific memory.
