Evolutionary change from induced to constitutive expression of an indirect plant resistance

Article Abstract:

The extrafloral nectar is constitutively secreted by Central American Acacia species that are obligately inhibited by ants. The phylogeny of the genus Acacia and closely related genera indicate that inducibility of extrafloral nectar is the plesiomorphic or 'original' state, whereas the constitutional extrafloral nectar is derived within Acacia.

Microarrays and species origins

Article Abstract:

A fresh approach to the question of whether, genetic modifications are the first steps in the origin of new species by using microarrays to make whole-genome comparisons between populations that can crossbreed, but only to a limited extend is provided. A rapid increase in this methodology can provide an insight into the origin of species.

A newly discovered species of living baleen whale

Article Abstract:

Eight Balaenoptera specimens of unknown identity were caught in the lower latitudinal Indo-Pacific waters by Japanese research whaling vessels. The seperation of the Balaenoptera brydei and the Balaenoptera edeni into two distinct species lifting the number of known Balaenoptera species to eight is highlighted.
