CERN claims first experimental creation of quark-gluon plasma

Article Abstract:

Scientists at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) believe that they have created the quark-gluon state of matter thought to have existed shortly after the Big Bang. In a series of experiments started in 1994, CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron fired very-high-energy beams of lead ions into gold or lead targets. This achievement has been welcomed by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), a dedicated quark-gluon plasma factory at the US Brook-haven National Laboratory. RHIC will study the properties of quark-gluon plasma itself, rather than just its decay.

CERN jumps another hurdle towards proton accelerator

Article Abstract:

Carlo Rubbia, director general of the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva (CERN) is a firm supporter of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) program. The cost of this particle accelerator is US $3 billion approximately. However, to start such a large scale project the 17 member states of the CERN have to be convinced first that the return would be more profitable. The LHC, if accepted, would be more internationally applicable than the Superconducting Super Collider.

CERN expels four Serbs to meet UN sanctions

Article Abstract:

The European Laboratory of Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, has told four Serbian scientists that they must leave the laboratory by the end of Feb 1993. The laboratory has apparently broken UN sanctions against Serbia by allowing them to remain. The four were conducting experiments on radio frequency systems for the TESLA cyclotron to be built in Belgrade.
