CIC chloride channels viewed through a transporter lens

Article Abstract:

The CIC family of chloride channels not only features genuine chloride channels, but also includes proton-coupled chloride transporters, which move chloride ions and protons across the membrane in opposite directions. The crystal structure of proton-coupled chloride transporters serves as a useful platform for understanding CIC channels, and features of chloride/proton exchange-transport may provide understanding of voltage-dependent gating of the channels.

Secondary active transport mediated by a prokaryotic homologue of ClC Cl (super -) channels

Article Abstract:

ClC Cl (super -) channels make up a large molecular family, ubiquitous with respect to both organisms and cell types. It seems that the structural boundary separating channels and transporters is not clear-cut because the same molecular architecture supports two fundamentally different transport mechanisms.

Coughing up flu's proton channels

Article Abstract:

The X-ray crystallographic and NMR spectroscopic studies of the influenza virus are reported. The findings provide insight into membrane-bound hydrogen-ion channel of virus necessary for infection and virulence.
