Camponotus fellah colony integration: worker individuality necessitates frequent hydrocarbon exchanges

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates the existence of a Gestalt colony odour in the ant species Camponotus fellah. It is shown that such odor exists in ant colonies and each colony has a unique odor.

Regulation of worker reproduction by direct physical contact in the ant Diacamma sp. from Japan

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates how the Diacamma sp. ant from Japan, in which the morphological queen is absent, transmits the gamergate signal to other colony members. It is shown that the gamergate signal is nonvolatile and transmitted only by physical contact with workers, which respond to the signal by stopping egg laying. Further details of the study are presented.
