Caught in the crossfire: DR Congo's Ituri Forest has survived seven years of civil war

Article Abstract:

The struggle for control of Democratic Republic (DR) Congo's rich resources continues to make peace elusive and children in the Ituri Forest are exposed to the well-armed militias who kill wildlife for bushmeat, ivory, and horn. A young Congolese college graduate describes the beginning of the civil war, when rebel warlord Laurent Kabila's rebel forces brought down the government of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko.

Caught in the crossfire: Part III

Article Abstract:

The civil war in Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) resulted in the presence of army camps in the Okapi Reserve leading to poaching due to the easy procurement of guns and ammunition. Careful diplomacy was required to deal with the situation and Dino Shwa helped the people in 2004 by teaching people better farming techniques, providing improved seed varieties and helping them define limits for agricultural zones.
