Changed perceptions in Braille readers

Article Abstract:

There is topographical disorder in the cortical somatosensory representation of the fingers in blind Braille readers who use three fingers on both hands to read. Furthermore, these readers frequently misperceive which of these fingers is being touched. The somatotopic representations of four blind Braille readers who used three fingers were tested in order to investigate the hypothesis that fusion of cortical representations is caused by increased simultaneous stimulation.

Imaging in the fourth dimension

Article Abstract:

A new approach to neuroimaging has added time as the fourth dimension. This research involved studying brain dynamics using stimulus-related magnetoencephalographic responses. There was found to be a link between the phase of the steady-state response and the frequency of the acoustic stimulus, with the timing of the neuronal response depending on the properties of the stimulus. The phase fluctuations were found to vary with the structures of the tone sequences.

A light and a dark side

Article Abstract:

Research examining the human cerebral cortical organization are discussed. Particular attention is given to connections between periphery and cortical zones and to the role of the synapses in maintaining the nervous network's functionality.
