A 6,000-year sedimentary molecular record of chemocline excursions in the Black Sea

Article Abstract:

The shoaling of the chemocline and penetration of the photic zone by anaerobic waters points to the possibility that anoxygenic photosynthesis may be a vital part of carbon cycling in the Black Sea. Natural causes of this phenomenon were not ruled out despite suggestions that anthropogenic decrease in freshwater input to the Black Sea may have played a role. Analysis of eight core samples of sediments revealed that Clorobiaceae was already active in the past. This implies that photic zone penetration by anaerobic waters was not recent and natural causes were more likely.

Article Abstract:

Pinyon jays a highly social member of the crow family seem to work out how to behave towards an unfamiliar jay by watching it in encounters with members of their own flock. Their behavior provides clues for a more complex set of cognitive skills evolving in social animals.
