Communication between oceans

Article Abstract:

Global ocean-circulation is based on differences in temperature and salinity, and transfers heat and fresh water between climatic zones and oceans. There are two independent global ocean-circulation cells. The Atlantic/Southern Ocean cell deposits the North Atlantic Deep Water into the Southern Ocean. The water is mixed by active vertical fluxes, and filters into the Indian and Pacific oceans. The second one is on a horizontal plane and links the Pacific and Indian oceans through the Indonesian Seas.

The brawniest retroflection

Article Abstract:

An interesting class of ocean-circulation patterns is one that reveals a retroflection--one in which a rapid current, moving astride a continent's western boundary, separates from the margin of the continent and curls back upon itself. Substantial buoyant pools of water separate from the consequent loop, inserting eddies into a nearby ocean province.

Cool Indonesian throughflow as a consequence surface layer flow

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian throughflow (ITF) modifies the heat and fresh-water budgets and air-sea heat fluxes of the Pacific and Indian ocean. The ocean current and stratification data along with the satellite-derived wind measurements are discussed.
