Control of osteoblast function and regulation of bone mass

Article Abstract:

This review discusses bone mass homeostasis, its regulatory factors and the regulation of osteoblast differentiation and function. Research indicates that skeleton functions in a feedback-controlled steady-state system integrating cellular signals and responses that maintain calcium transport and strength. Research advances in the area of osteoporosis and its prevention or reversal are aslo presented.

Cranial skeletal biology

Article Abstract:

This review discusses skeletogenesis and variations in skeletal form with respect to the role played by neural crest cells, which differentiate into cartilage and bone. Research describes the molecular aspects of the morphogenesis governing the generation of neural crest cells, their migration, and differentiation into mature skeletal structures.

The netrin receptor UNC5B mediates guidance events controlling morphogenesis of the vascular system

Article Abstract:

It is shown that endothelial tip cells of the vascular system express the repulsive netrin receptor UNC5B. Disruption of the UNC5B gene in mice, or of UNC5B or netrin-1a in zebrafish, leads to aberrant extension of endothelial tip cell filopodia, excessive vessel branching and abnormal navigation.
