Cost-cutting and downsizing take their toll on US R&D

Article Abstract:

The National Science Foundation's report on research and development spending foresees a 3% drop in federal research funding and a 1% drop in industry funding to $101.6 billion, inflation adjusted dollars. Basic research will fall slightly because the 20% reduction in industry-funded basic research is not counterbalanced by the expansion in university research. The cause of industry reductions is attributed to downsizing and cost cutting despite the atmosphere of economic growth.

NSF 'should help fund private observatories.' (National Science Foundation)

Article Abstract:

A report of the US National Research Council insists on the sponsoring of private observatories by the National Science Foundation (NSF). NSF funding for new instrumentation at the private observatories in return for the use of these observatories will prevent the impending financial crisis in US astronomy. The implementation of this proposal will prevent the closure of telescopic services offered by the National Optical Astronomy Observatories in Arizona and in Tucson.

Private observatories seek public funding

Article Abstract:

The directors of top privately run US observatories have called on the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide funding of up to 8 million pounds sterling a year to help pay for instrumentation. This would replace the Facilities Instrumentation Program whereby the NSF pays for instruments in exchange for observatories providing telescope time to outside researchers.
