Constraints on the origin of the Moon's atmosphere from observations during a lunar eclipse

Article Abstract:

The characteristics of the rarefied lunar atmosphere, obtained from sodium and potassium emissions, provide significant information regarding the evolution of atmospheres on primitive solar bodies in the universe. Analysis of Na emission from the Moon during a total eclipse reveals an extended sodium atmosphere with a brightness pattern unexplained by solar-wind or micrometeorite sputtering sources. The possibility of sunlight-driven mechanisms such as photon sputtering or thermal desorption behind the lunar atmosphere are discussed.

Electronic and structural transitions in dense liquid sodium

Article Abstract:

Ab initio calculations are used for describing the unusual behavior in dense sodium. The analysis has shown that molten sodium undergoes a series of pressure-induced structural and electronic transitions, analogous to those seen in solid sodium but commencing at a much lower pressure in the presence of liquid disorder.

The sources of sodium escaping from lo revealed by spectral high definition imaging

Article Abstract:

A spatially confined stream and various other sources of sodium escaping from the Jupiter's moon Io, are presented. The spatial extent of the ionospheric wake that feeds the stream in Io is found to be much more than other sources.
