DARPA's small satellite programme shrinks

Article Abstract:

Three small satellite programs were cut from the budget of the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Congress' 1993 defense appropriations bill. DARPA has previously financed development of small launchers and research into reducing size and weight of satellite components. Proponents of the programs contend that in addition to military applications, small satellite technology will give astronomers and other scientists improved access to Earth orbit. Critics claim the military applications are redundant and that improving Earth-orbit access is not Defense Department business.

Earth observation programme 'needs tighter coordination.'(U.S. Global Change Research Program)

Article Abstract:

The National Research Council (NRC) criticized the coordination of the US Global Change Research Program, for developing an understanding of terrestrial processes from satellite observation data. The lack of coordination between the agencies in the research program can lead to inefficiencies and missed science opportunities, according to the NRC. However, the program's goals are valuable, according to the NRC, which may save its funding but greater organization between agencies is necessary.

Brazil's space programme comes of age

Article Abstract:

The 1999 Brazilian space programme will include the new VLS rocket, and the launch of the first of two China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellites (CBERS). The National Space Research Institute (INPE) is planning to launch SSR satellites to observe Brazil and other tropical nations. INPE is the lead centre for interpreting remote-sensing images, and a private industry in remote-sensing analysis is slowly developing.
