Deep divisions complicate global environment meeting

Article Abstract:

Representatives from 60 nations will meet in Beijing, China, to hold talks and settle their differences regarding the Global Environment Facility (GEF). During the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the GEF was designated as the body responsible for funding projects on biodiversity and climate change. Rich and poor countries, however, are divided over the GEF decision process, with the former calling for a voting system based on financial contribution and the latter demanding for parity in voting power. The US and European countries are also at odds over the manner of payment for GEF.
