Three-dimensional structure of the catalytic subunit of protein serine/threonine phosphatase-1

Article Abstract:

Serine/threonine phosphatases serve important regulatory functions and yet their structures have not been determined, preventing understanding of the mechanisms. The 2.1 angstrom X-ray crystallography three-dimensional structure of PP-1 complexed with microcystin, a toxin, allows for the dissection of these phosphatases' functions through interpretation of the structure. The structure differs significantly from that of tyrosine phosphatases because of active sites containing two metal ions and metal-dependent catalytic mechanisms.

Phosphorylation of WAVE1 regulates actin polymerization and dendritic spine morphology

Article Abstract:

A study shows that WAVE1, the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein-family verprolin homologous protein 1, is phosphorylated at multiple sites by cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) both in vitro and in intact mouse neurons. The results have suggested that phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of WAVE1 in neurons has an important role in the formation of the filamentous actin cytoskeleton, and hence in the regulation of dendritic spine morphology.

Effects of chronic exposure to cocaine are regulated by the neuronal protein Cdk5

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of DNA array analysis of striatal material from transgenic mice to determine the effects of chronic exposure to cocaine. The influence of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 is discussed.
