Chemical orientation to food by the crayfish Orconectes rusticus: Influence of hydrodynamics

Article Abstract:

Crayfish may orient to food sources in streams with either sand or cobble substrate, and it is likely they use information contained in the spatial and temporal distribution of chemicals in the flow, to make directional decisions. They were found to locate the source more quickly, spent more time moving while orienting in streams with a cobble substrate, compared with those having a sand substrate.

Prolonged exposure to social odours alters subsequent social interactions in crayfish (Orconectes rusticus)

Article Abstract:

Study was conducted to examine whether exposure to social odours, in the absence of other sensory contact with a 'slender' crayfish, alters subsequent agonistic behavior in crayfish. The results show that the 'senders' did not have sufficient chemical reserves to reinforce the visual display, while the 'receivers' had sufficient chemical reserves.

Integration of multiple predator cues by the crayfish Orconectes propinquus

Article Abstract:

Research is discussed concerning the response of the crayfish Orconectes propinquus to tactile and visual clues which were presented either in conjunction with conspecific alarm odour or alone.
