Detecting the effects of fishing on seabed community diversity: Importance of scale and sample size

Article Abstract:

The importance of the extent of area sampled was investigated to the observed outcome of comparisons of the diversity of seabed assemblages in different areas of the seabed that experience either low or high levels of fishing disturbance. The results suggest that detection of the effects of fishing disturbance on benthic diversity are scale-dependent in relation to the size of the sample collected and the type of sampling device used.

Fishing-gear restrictions and conservation of benthic habitat complexity

Article Abstract:

The benthic habitat and communities in a particular area are compared with different areas subjected to a range of fishing disturbance regimes. Areas fished with towed gear are dominated by smaller-bodied fauna and scavenging taxa. Conflict management in the form of gear-restriction measures is beneficial to conserving habitats and benthic fauna sensitive to bottom-fishing disturbance.

The Role of Ecolabeling in Fisheries Management and Conservation

Article Abstract:

Suggestions for greater marine fisher participation in Marine Stewardship Council conservation policies include increased engagement of buyers and retailers instead of individual consumers, using tiered certification, and implementing certification of fishers instead of fisheries.
