Diatom carbon export enhanced by silicate upwelling in the northeast Atlantic

Article Abstract:

Study is conducted to show that with nitrate still available for new production, the diatom bloom is prolonged where there is a periodic supply of new silicate as diatoms specifically thrive by mining deep-water silicate brought to the surface by an unstable ocean front. This mechanism is not limited to silicate fertilizations but can support nitrate-, phosphate- or iron- limited frontal regions in oceans elsewhere.

Copper-containing plastocyanin used for electron transport by an oceanic diatom

Article Abstract:

The greater Cu requirement in an oceanic diatom, Thalassiosira oceania, which is entirely due to a single Cu-containing protein, plastocyanin is reported. The results suggest that selection pressure imposed by Fe limitation has resulted in the use of a Cu protein for photosynthesis in an oceanic diatom.
