Different types of fear-conditioned behaviour mediated by separate nuclei within amygdala

Article Abstract:

The role of the amygdala in anxiety and conditioned fear has been emphasised and shown to project to cortical and subcortical regions. Some nuclei were found to have separate roles in fear responses. Rats with lesion of the central nucleus showed less behaviour suppression from the fear stimulus but were able to avoid further presentations of the aversive stimulus. Animals with lesions of the basolateral amygdala could not avoid the aversive stimulus but showed normal conditioned suppression to the stimulus.

Use of dung as a tool by burrowing owls

Article Abstract:

The widespread collection of mammalian dung by Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) is described. It is shown that they use this dung as a bait to attract dung beetles, a major item of prey, and the importance of tool use in a wild animal is estimated.

Dopamine as chicken and egg

Article Abstract:

The behavioral responses in animal changes according to the task, which they perform during the test in laboratory, are discussed. The neurotransmitter dopamine is responsible for these response changes, and is illustrated with some examples.
