Disorder is the new order

Article Abstract:

Pure, perfectly regular crystals were believed to be essential for the efficient operation of nonlinear optical devices. But, it seems that disordered materials might actually perform better as they are transparent, increase the efficiency of nonlinear frequency conversion and are beneficial to a family of wave phenomena, such as laser action, wireless communication, optical cryptography and time reversal focusing.

Multimodal fast optical interrogation of neural circuitry

Article Abstract:

An archaeal light-driven chloride pump (NpHR) from Natronomonas pharaonis for temporally precise optical inhibition of neural activity is identified and developed. The findings suggest that NpHR and ChRZ form a complete system for multimodal, high-speed, genetically targeted, all-optical interrogation of living neural circuits.

Drawing quantum circuitry

Article Abstract:

The author discusses the use of atomic-force microscopes operating at low-temperatures in creating quantum electronic devices. The authors concludes that the erasable electrostatic lithography can help to understand quantum devices' physics.
