Effects of a stationary GPS fix-rate bias on habitat-selection analyses

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that animal behavior such as moving versus bedding is a primary source of data loss and must be incorporated to eliminate biases in data collected via global positioning system radiotelemetry. Habitat use by mule deer populations is presented as an illustration.

Balancing number of locations with number of individuals in telemetry studies

Article Abstract:

The implications of number of locations and the number of sampled individuals on the outcome of habitat-selection analyses are discussed. Results indicated that habitat-selection analyses were more sensitive to inter- than intra-individual variability.

Are all global positioning systems collars created equal? Correcting habitat-induced bias using three brands in the central Canadian Rockies

Article Abstract:

A statistical approach to correct global positioning systems (GPS) habitat bias for habitat selection studies using GPS collars is provided. Results concluded that correction for GPS should be mandatory for Televilt collars in the Canadian Rockies.
