Electronic journals have a future

Article Abstract:

A conference on 'The role of journals in scholarly communication,' held at the University of Chicago, prompts the conclusion that the probable growth of electronic journals may endanger the research journals' integrated format. Electronic publishing will further the tendency to deal in single articles rather than entire magazines. The ever-increasing numbers of print journals and the resulting expense imposed on librarians and other subscribers account for the largely friendly response to electronic journals at the conference.

Radioastronomy and the unquiet radio sky

Article Abstract:

The increase in number of radio frequencies is causing problems for radioastronomers as they are polluting the radioastronomy spectrum. Astronomers are demanding the protection of some specific frequencies which are useful to them. Companies are interested in buying these radio frequencies but they are not willing to invest in astronomical research. The future of radio interference from long baseline interferometry depends upon the development of the European very-long baseline interferometry correlator station.

Sustainable development unsustainable

Article Abstract:

Wilfred Beckerman in his book 'Small is Stupid' asserts that notions of 'sustainable development' and 'precautionary principle' are empty of operational meaning. Quoting the Brundtland report, sustainable development must meet the needs of present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Beckerman questions the validity of the 'precautionary principle' which states that one should act now to prevent future social damage.
