Blastomeres and stem cells

Article Abstract:

A new approach has offered a possible route around the objection that the creation of human embryonic stem (hES) cells involves destroying the embryo from which they arise. The method could be applied as part of the established technique of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which is used to identify genetic defects in embryos created through in vitro fertilization before they are implanted in the uterus.

Human embryonic stem cell lines derived from single blastomeres

Article Abstract:

A series of separate experiments demonstrating that human embryonic stem (HES) cells can be derived from single blastomeres is reported. The ability to create new stem cell lines and therapies without destroying embryos might address the ethical concerns of many, and allow the generation of matched tissue for children and siblings born from transferred preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) embryos.
