Episodic-like memory during cache recovery by scrub jays

Article Abstract:

It is known that food storing birds can remember the spatial location and contents of their caches, and they can adapt their caching and recovery methods to the perishability of food stores. Scrub jays were shown to remember when food items were stored in experiments using perishable 'wax worms' and non-perishable peanuts. They searched for the favoured fresh wax worms preferentially, although learned not to search for worms after longer intervals, during which the worms had decayed.

Female-female cooperation in polygynous oystercatchers

Article Abstract:

The oystercatcher, Haematopus ostralegus, is a monogamous species, and studies show that both parents are required to raise chicks to fledglings. However, polygyny is also occasionally reported. Polygynous oystercatcher trios are described. The classical form of polygyny, two female territories within a male territory, was observed, but other variants were female-female cooperation, female-female copulations and joint nesting.
