Europe chooses cosmic radiation project

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's space science advisory committee has selected the Cobras/Samba project over four rival projects due to its low ECU340 million cost and simple pilot phase design. The Cobras/Samba satellite will measure cosmic background radiation over the entire sky and will have ten times greater sensitivity and 50 times the angular resolution of the Cosmic Background Explorer. The satellite will look for primordial irregularities that gave rise to galaxies. The determination of the values of astrophysical factors, such as the Hubble constant is a part of the project.
