A neuronal population code for sound localization

Article Abstract:

Researchers have been able to a develop a model which can determine how the sharpening of interaural time difference (ITD) tuning affects the accuracy with which listeners can locate sounds. A signal detection theory was used the calculate the minimum detectable change in ITD which could be detected by different numbers of neurons. This allowed the performance of neurons at each level to be assessed. It was concluded that the broadly tuned nature of the population code is the neural basis for the decline in acuity in the presence of multiple sound sources.

Characterization and localization of the FMR-1 gene product associated with fragile X syndrome

Article Abstract:

The characteristics and functions of FMR-1 gene-encoded protein, asspciated with Fragile X Syndrome were studied. Immunoblotting of lymphoblastoid cels indicated the prodyction of four different protein products, possibility resulting from alternative splicing. Intracellular localization were found to be cytoplasmic, especially in the epithelium of the esophagus. On the other hand, localization was found to be nuclear in other cells.
