Fatty acyl-CoA thioesters are ligands of hepatic nuclear-factor-4alpha

Article Abstract:

The onset and progression of several diseases, including cancer and hypertension, are modulated by dietary fatty acids, with their effects dependant upon their degree of saturation and chain length. The pathogen and course of these diseases are governed by the expression of genes, in turn controlled by an orphan transcription factor, hepatocyte nuclear factor-4alpha (HNF-4alpha), belonging to the nuclear receptor superfamily. A new study shows that long-chain fatty acids directly regulate HNF-4alpha's transcriptional activity by binding as their acyl-CoA thioesters to the ligand-binding domain of HNF-4alpha.

Japan reviews costs of nuclear reprocessing

Article Abstract:

Increased costs resulting from a rise in material prices and earthquake protection expenses have led to the redesigning and scaling back of a nuclear waste processing facility in Japan. The redesigned plant, although smaller, will have the same processing capacity as the original one. But the accident at the Monju reactor has sparked off much political opposition in the country to the nuclear energy program. Even the international community is showing concern about Japan's stockpile of plutonium. The effects of doubling the construction costs of the plant are discussed.
