Flexible foraging patterns under different time constraints in tropical boobies

Article Abstract:

The effects of extrinsic and intrinsic limitations on the foraging behavior of the sympatric red-footed booby, Sula sula, and brown booby, Sula leucogaster, during incubation are examined. The analysis suggest that the time available for foraging is limited by a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic processes in both species and thus the boobies adjust their foraging behavior according to extrinsic constraints.

Evidence of intra-specific competition for food in a pelagic seabird

Article Abstract:

It has been established that the per capita population expansion rates of northern gannet Morus bassanus at colonies in the UK and Ireland have fallen with rising population size. Density-dependent fish disturbance was found to be sufficient to substantially cut the mean profitability of fish shoals close to colonies, and thus produce suitable conditions for intra-specific competition.
