Flowering inferno

Article Abstract:

The role of grassland burning in producing greenhouse gases is the focus of two research efforts in Africa. Donald R. Cahoon, Jr. and co-workers are searching for recurrent features in the burning of African savannas. Such burning is environmentally important because it produces 1/3 of human-caused carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide as well as destroying three times more biomass as the burning of rainforests. The Southern African Fire-Atmosphere Research Initiative also began, in Sep 1992, to set fires in South Africa's Kruger National Park and to monitor the full range of environmental consequences.

Supernova brightens the horizon

Article Abstract:

The discovery of supernova 1993A (SN 1993J) by amateur astronomer Francisco Garcia in the spiral galaxy M81 of the Ursa Major Constellation is discussed. As SN 1993J is found in a region of the skies that has been closely watched for more than 200 years, it was easy to determine which star in the galaxy had exploded. Rapid electronic communication systems allowed many astronomers to train their telescopes on the same region of the sky and to obtain crucial photographs before and after the explosion of the supernova.

Brane new world

Article Abstract:

A proposal by a team of theorists that a slice through multidimensional space forms the basis of the universe's existence is discussed. Also discussed is the relationship of gravity to nuclear forces and electromagnetism.
