Fluctuations caught in the act

Article Abstract:

It is possible to capture and measure critical fluctuations in the domains in a lipid monolayer by immobilizing it on a solid support and visualizing the pattern with atomic-force microscopy. In this research, the monolayer was immobilized by transferring it, by horizontal dipping, to a solid, hydrophilic substrate of mica using Langmuir-Blodgett techniques. It appears that fluctuations in lipid bilayer properties could be the reason for lipid-domain formation in biomembranes.

Molecular layering during evaporation of ultrathin liquid films

Article Abstract:

An experiment using ellipsometry revealed that distinct molecular layers can appear in a thin liquid film as a result of evaporation. A film of tetrakis silane started out with a smooth gradient and ended up with 10 angstrom molecular steps. It was also observed that oscillation is a function of film thickness. Thus, layering is a result of differences between rates of evaporation among incomplete and complete layers.

Nanoscale control of chain polymerization

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the spontaneous polymerization of molecules to form long chains following activation by a trigger. The polymerization of molecules over distances of 1nm with precision control is discussed.
