Foams flow by stick and slip

Article Abstract:

Foam flow arises through topological rearrangements of bubble positions that have characteristics similar to that of non-linear dynamics of avalanches and the intermittent stick-slip dynamics of earthquakes. The bubbles exhibit an intermittent stick-slip motion. Numerical simulations consider the interaction between bubble neighbors and include the critical length scale controlling the dynamics of a foam. Experiments using imaging techniques that use multiply scattered light to study the bulk of a foam compare well with numerical simulations.

Diffusion in a different direction

Article Abstract:

The unusual diffusion research strategy of scientists Vailati and Giglio demonstrates that prolonged velocity fluctuations occur quickly during diffusion until the concentration gradient is relaxed. Large spatial fluctuations perpendicular to the gradient are observed. Results indicate that the size of the fluctuations is restricted by gravity.

Memories of paste

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the behavior of pastes which are subjected to stress or loading. The forces acting between the particles within the paste under normal conditions and when stress is applied are discussed.
