Forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon

Article Abstract:

Potential for fire in the moist evergreen forests of Amazonia is recurrent and disturbance of ecosystems is severe according to studies. In the Brazilian Amazon basin forest fires are underreported and underestimated. Many fires escape from the agricultural areas they were to have been confined to and thousands of square kilometers burn. Because of media attention for the Roraima fires, which were extensive and began in 1997 during an El Nino, the government of Brazil has been motivated to confront uncontrolled forest fires. Effects of recurring fires can be seen in the Tailandia, Para, region, so a grim scenario is not theoretical. The Tailandia region was thought of as a new Amazonian frontier early in the 1990s. If fires are not prevented by land management changes savanna and scrub vegetation will take over as they do on abandoned agricultural land.

Synergistic interactions between habitat fragmentation and fire in evergreen tropical forests

Article Abstract:

A study of the growing prevalence of fragmentation and fire in tropical forests, which makes it imperative to quantify changes in these disturbances, and the ways in which they interact across the landscape is presented. The results show that the synergism between forest fragmentation and fire poses serious risks to tropical ecosystems and has important implications for land management.

Conservation Threat of Increasing Fire Frequencies in the Western Ghats, India

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the current fire regime in India's Western Ghats constitutes a persistent and critical conservation threat to forests that are both inside and outside designated protective reserves.
