Forest preserved

Article Abstract:

The Sterling Forest in the Hudson Highlands in New York State was saved from development by local wildlife conservation groups who convinced the federal government to allocate money for the purchase of the land. The Sterling Forest Corp., which owned the property, had planned to develop the land, and house 35,000 residents and 20,000 commercial employees on the 25% of the land, but was willing to sell the land to the government for $55 million, which was raised from public and private interests, including a $17.5 million deal for the federal government.

Devils of the forest: elusive mandrills lead pursuers in circles

Article Abstract:

A wildlife biologists describes traveling to Gabon to study the behavior and ecology of mandrills. Mandrills are large, ferocious-lokking monkeys that live in the thick undergrowth of the Gabon forest and are difficult to spot. They are skilled at outwitting humans, who often chase them in circles. Groups of 15 to up to several hundred mandrills range widely at all levels of the forest searching for food. During the dry season they often raid crops near villages.
