Food distance and its effect on nutrient balancing in a mobile insect herbivore

Article Abstract:

The food distance of different nutrient contents and its effect on the macronutrient regulation and the patterns of food acquisition, movement and feeding activity in fifth-instar nymphs of Locusta migratoria are investigated. The way in which distance between foods influences foraging strategies, and the possible role of learning in its development is discussed.

Optimal foraging when regulating intake of multiple nutrients

Article Abstract:

State-space models of nutrition are combined with Tilman's models of resource exploitation to study about animals regulating their intake of multiple nutrients independently rather than maximizing energy intake subject to constraints. An experiment is conducted to map out the performance landscape and predict foraging decisions of a generalist leaf-feeding caterpillar, Spodoptera littoralis.
