Geological and palaeontological context of a Pliocene juvenile hominin at Dikika, Ethiopia

Article Abstract:

A geological mapping and stratigraphic measurement of the Dikika Research Project (DRP) area, and the context of a remarkably well-preserved skeleton of the earliest known juvenile hominin at the Dikika DIK-1 locality are reported. The mapping allows a complete definition of the hominin-bearing Hadar Formation and presents a cohesive structural and tectonic framework defining its relationship to adjacent strata.

Global vegetation change through the Miocene/Pliocene boundary

Article Abstract:

Geophysical evidence suggests that the sharp rise in C4 biomass on earth eight million years ago was caused by favourable environment conditions for C4-photosynthesizing plants. Carbon isotope studies using hypsodont mammals shows that larger mammals from the period ate pure C3, or C3-dominated plant matter. C4 biomass levels reflect carbon dioxide levels in the late Miocene period.

Early pliocene hominids from Gona, Ethiopia

Article Abstract:

Fossil evidence of Late Miocene-Early Pliocene hominid evolution is rare and limited to few sites in Ethiopia, Kenya and Chad. New Early Pliocene hominid discoveries and their palaeoenvironmental context from the fossiliferous deposits of As Duma, Gona Western Margin (GWM), Afar, Ethiopia is reported.
